Peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that is due to exposure to asbestos fibers. When the fibers are airborne, they can become inhaled into the lungs and make their way to various parts of the body. Peritoneal mesothelioma occurs when the asbestos fibers make their way into the abdominal lining which is called the peritoneum. Mesothelioma cancer is caused by exposure to asbestos fibers. The fibers become lodged in the mesothelial cells which line the abdominal cavity, the lungs, and the heart. Since this is a cancer, it causes the mesothelial cells to become abnormal and rapidly divide. The cancer often spreads to other organs in the body once afflicted. (more…)
