Asbestos Cancer News (Massachusetts)

The cities of North Brookfield and Worchester Massachusetts will be receiving funds for asbestos cleanup.  Amounting to $200,000, this grant will come from the federal government to help clean up a property that was once called Aztec Industries/Asbestos Textile.  This property is located on S. Common St in Massachusetts and was used until around the mid 1980s for producing products that contained asbestos – one product being fabric. The goal is to make the property suitable for lease and open up new jobs for the local workers.

Asbestos was once used without governmental regulations since scientists did not know that it caused cancer.  Asbestos cancer is now a well known result from asbestos exposure.  Once asbestos fibers are airborne, they can become lodged in various membranes throughout her bodies. These fibers get stuck in mesothelial cells and cause various illnesses.  The most common diseases caused by asbestos exposure include asbestos cancer (mesothelioma) and asbestosis. (more…)

My mother died last year of mesothelioma, the asbestos cancer. We have no idea where exosed so I'm trying to learn as much as I can about the places you have lived. Carswell has lived in the'50s. Let me know if anyone knows anything about Carswell, or the area around him. If there are factories around the area, or how far comes from the top and fifth streets (because 19 cases of mesothelioma were diagnosed in that area). Just across the info you have would be helpful. Thanks so much!

These tiny fibers measure approximately 3.0-20.0 µm (micrometer) in length and can be as thin as 0.01 µm. A human hair has an approximate size anywhere from 17 to 181 µm in width. Asbestos is easiest to observe with the assistance of a microscope. (more…)
