Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that is due to exposure to asbestos fibers. When the fibers are airborne, they can become inhaled into the lungs and make their way to various parts of the body. Peritoneal mesothelioma occurs when the asbestos fibers make their way into the abdominal lining which is called the peritoneum. The peritoneum is a protective layer that is made up of cells called mesothelial cells.

How asbestos fibers make their way into the lining of the abdominal cavity to cause peritoneal mesothelioma is not well known. It is believed that the fibers make their way through the lymphatic system but this has not been proven. The asbestos then become a permanent fixture in the mesothelium since the body is unable to rid itself of these fibers. The mesothelial cells then undergo a change which causes them to rapidly divide, causing tumors to grow. Peritoneal mesothelioma is the end result.

Symptoms of Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Since peritoneal mesothelioma affects the abdominal lining, some common symptoms include:

  • A mass in the abdomen
  • Chest pain
  • Abdominal discomfort and pain
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Weakness
  • Weight loss
  • Fever
  • Anemia
  • Bowel obstruction

Diagnosis of Peritoneal Mesothelioma:

Peritoneal mesothelioma diagnosis requires a patient to see a doctor for testing. A diagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma is only possible after a biopsy of the mesothelial cells or fluid is tested. The patient will undergo an examination including chest x-rays, CT scan or MRI, and a biopsy. The doctor will look for tumors, abnormal cells, and fluid buildup.

Treatment of Peritoneal Mesothelioma

It can take many years for symptoms to arise so most people aren’t diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma until 20 plus years later. Any treatment for this type of cancer is not often curative. It is meant as a way to reduce the spread of the cancer and to make the sufferer more comfortable.

Treatment for peritoneal mesothelioma will begin as soon as the patient is diagnosed and can include any of the following techniques:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Alternative therapies (i.e. herbs, vitamins, acupuncture etc.)
