Pericardial Mesothelioma
Pericardial mesothelioma is a result of asbestos exposure. It is a rare form of cancer which affects the pericardium. The pericardium is a protective layer made up of mesothelial cells which line the heart.
How the fibers travel to the heart and cause pericardial mesothelioma is not well understood. It is known that the asbestos fibers are inhaled and become lodged in the pericardium, but it is not well known how the fibers actually make it through the lungs and into the pericardial layer. It is possible that the fibers travel through the bloodstream but this is not yet determined.
When the asbestos fibers get trapped in the mesothelial layer of the heart, the body is unable to get rid of them. It can take years to develop pericardial mesothelioma but this can eventually develop since the fibers are a constant irritant to this protective layer. Once the fibers are lodged, they cause the cells to go through a change that is not well understood. This change causes the cells to rapidly divide which thickens the mesothelium. Tumors develop and pericardial mesothelioma is diagnosed
Symptoms of Pericardial Mesothelioma
Since pericardial mesothelioma affects the heart, some common symptoms include:
- Chest pain
- Heart beat irregularities
- Shortness of breath
- Persistent cough
- Easily fatigued
Diagnosis of Pericardial Mesothelioma:
In order to be diagnosed with pericardial mesothelioma, a patient needs to see a doctor for testing. A diagnosis of pericardial mesothelioma is only possible after a biopsy of the mesothelial cells or fluid is tested. The patient will likely undergo a full examination which possibly includes chest x-rays, CT scan or MRI, and a biopsy. The doctor will look for thickening of the tumors and also fluid buildup.
Treatment of Pericardial Mesothelioma
It is often years after exposure that people are diagnosed with pericardial mesothelioma. After being diagnosed, treatment will begin and can include any of the following techniques:
- Surgery to remove the tumors
- Chemotherapy
- Radiation therapy
- Alternative therapies
