Mesothelioma Cancer Types
Mesothelioma cancer is caused by exposure to asbestos fibers. The fibers become lodged in the mesothelial cells which line the abdominal cavity, the lungs, and the heart. Since this is a cancer, it causes the mesothelial cells to become abnormal and rapidly divide. The cancer often spreads to other organs in the body once afflicted.
There are various types and severities of mesothelioma cancer which include:
Pleural Mesothelioma - This is the most common type of malignant mesothelioma and causes about 1/3 of all cases of mesothelioma cancer. This form affects the pleura which is the protective lining of the lungs and chest cavity. Once the asbestos fibers are embedded in the lungs, it is unknown what reaction takes place to cause pleural mesothelioma.
Peritoneal Mesothelioma - This type of malignant mesothelioma cancer affects the lining of the abdominal cavity - the peritoneum. This is a rare condition.
Pericardial Mesothelioma - This type of cancer affects the pericardium which is composed of mesothelial cells that line the heart. This type of cancer is also rare.
Testicular Mesothelioma - This cancer affects the cells lining that surrounds the testicles and is the rarest form of malignant mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma cancer is aggressive and usually not diagnosed until many years after exposure since it takes this long for symptoms to rise. If you suspect that you may have an asbestos related disease due to exposure to this mineral, you should seek medical attention. If you would like to know your rights and file a suit in court to obtain compensation for your damages, you must first contact an asbestos attorney.
