Peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that is due to exposure to asbestos fibers. When the fibers are airborne, they can become inhaled into the lungs and make their way to various parts of the body. Peritoneal mesothelioma occurs when the asbestos fibers make their way into the abdominal lining which is called the peritoneum. The peritoneum is a protective layer that is made up of cells called mesothelial cells. (more…)

Pericardial mesothelioma is a result of asbestos exposure. It is a rare form of cancer which affects the pericardium. The pericardium is a protective layer made up of mesothelial cells which line the heart.
How the fibers travel to the heart and cause pericardial mesothelioma is not well understood. It is known that the asbestos fibers are inhaled and become lodged in the pericardium, but it is not well known how the fibers actually make it through the lungs and into the pericardial layer. (more…)

Pleural mesothelioma is lung cancer caused by inhalation of asbestos fibers. Pleural mesothelioma accounts for about two thirds of all mesothelioma cases and is always malignant.
When asbestos is airborne, it can become lodged in various places throughout the body. Asbestos gets trapped in mesothelium which is a natural protective dual layer that surrounds many cavities and organs throughout the body. (more…)

Mesothelioma treatment begins immediately after being diagnosed. The type of treatment a mesothelioma victim receives will be dependent on a variety of factors including
- Location of the tumor
- Type of cancer (pericardial mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma, pleural mesothelioma etc.)
- Size of the tumor
- Whether or not the tumor has metastasized (spread to other areas of the body)
- The stage of the cancer
- The patient’s age
- How healthy the patient is in general
If you’re diagnosed with the mesothelioma, you’ll probably see a variety of different doctors including oncologists, pulmonologists, radiologists, etc. reason for seeing numerous different types of doctors is to find the best mesothelioma treatment for your condition. (more…)

A mesothelioma diagnosis is always difficult whether it is pericardial mesothelioma, a peritoneal mesothelioma, pleural mesothelioma or any other variety.
Most of our body’s cavities and main organs are surrounded by mesothelial cells. These cells line are lungs, heart, and abdominal cavity and provide a protective layer. This layer is called the mesothelium. Two layers comprised mesothelium and the job of the mesothelium is to produce fluid that assists our organs to move. (more…)

Mesothelioma cancer is caused by exposure to asbestos fibers. The fibers become lodged in the mesothelial cells which line the abdominal cavity, the lungs, and the heart. Since this is a cancer, it causes the mesothelial cells to become abnormal and rapidly divide. The cancer often spreads to other organs in the body once afflicted. (more…)

Asbestos disease is caused when asbestos is airborne and the tiny fibers are inhaled into the lungs which cause adverse medical conditions. Once embedded into the soft tissue, the asbestos fibers cause scarring and irritation to the exposure area causing asbestos cancer (mesothelioma) or other medical conditions such as asbestosis. Asbestos and cancer go hand in hand since these tiny fibers embed themselves into the lungs once inhaled and cause mesothelioma (a form of cancer).
Asbestos poses its greatest risk when the product or material containing it is disrupted or damaged. Damage to the material causes the particles to be released into the air. When asbestos fibers are inhaled into the lungs they become trapped and remain in the lungs as an irritant for a very long time. (more…)
