Asbestos Regulations

Asbestosis regulations are controlled by the EPA, UPSC, and OSHA.

Asbestos regulations by the EPA include controlling certain substances that contain asbestos such as commercial and specialty paper. Some of these substances include “new users” of asbestos. The EPA has also banned numerous products that contain asbestos such as commercial paper, flooring felt, and specialty paper etc.

The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) outlines asbestos regulations of hazardous chemical substances and mixtures, asbestos containing materials (ACM) in schools, labeling requirements, and prohibits the manufacturing and distribution of specific asbestos containing materials.

The Clean Air Act outlines asbestos regulations for possible air contaminating sources. It has banned the use of most spray-applied asbestos containing materials as well as some pipe and block insulation for pipes, hot water tanks, and boilers. See the EPA for full description.

OSHA asbestos regulations include keeping workers safe on the job. People who may become exposed to asbestos in the workplace are protected by this department.

Asbestos is not regulated in the home. It is up to the home owner (or landlord) to seek professional assistance if there is a problem. If asbestos is found within your home, it is advisable not to disturb it. It is only dangerous if it is airborne. If you DO have asbestos which is airborne, you need to contact a professional asbestos consultant to come in and take care of it.
