Asbestos Funding for Two Massachusetts Cities

Asbestos Cancer News (Massachusetts)

The cities of North Brookfield and Worchester Massachusetts will be receiving funds for asbestos cleanup.  Amounting to $200,000, this grant will come from the federal government to help clean up a property that was once called Aztec Industries/Asbestos Textile.  This property is located on S. Common St in Massachusetts and was used until around the mid 1980s for producing products that contained asbestos – one product being fabric. The goal is to make the property suitable for lease and open up new jobs for the local workers.

Asbestos was once used without governmental regulations since scientists did not know that it caused cancer.  Asbestos cancer is now a well known result from asbestos exposure.  Once asbestos fibers are airborne, they can become lodged in various membranes throughout her bodies. These fibers get stuck in mesothelial cells and cause various illnesses.  The most common diseases caused by asbestos exposure include asbestos cancer (mesothelioma) and asbestosis.

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer attacks in mesothelial cells of our lungs, heart, and abdomen. Mesothelioma is rare but very aggressive and once diagnosed; the prognosis is usually not good. Asbestosis is a non-cancerous but serious illness caused by asbestos exposure.  Asbestosis causes breathing difficulties and shortness of breath.
